This weekend we attended our first cherry blossom festival! We traveled to Hirosaki Park which has over 2,600 cherry blossom trees and one of the most spectacular festivals in Japan! We walked amongst the sakura trees along the banks of the Iwaki River and got to see Hirosaki Castle.
Cherry blossom season runs late March – early May depending on where you’re located in Japan. The sakura trees start to bloom in the southern parts of the country first and as Spring progresses through the country so do the blooms. The cherry blossoms bloomed early this year due to warm weather which resulted in the festival beginning a weekend earlier than anticipated, so we caught the first day of the festival before the hustle and bustle got too bad!
Hirosaki Park is a good location to visit year-round as it has the historical Hirosaki Castle, botanical gardens, and a festival for pretty much every season. The park also offers bike and row boat rentals which looked like a lot of fun. The festival featured tons of booths offering food, fair-style games, musical acts, and more!
Here’s a few pictures of our day! 🙂
